The Gate Is Green

TL;DR: Why Claude's messages are hard to read — measured. With a 50-word dictionary of Claudish and the one instruction that targets the actual problem.

I came back to my computer one evening in July to a status message from Claude: “Gate suite is rebuilding — when it lands green I'll proceed with the swap.”

I've worked with Claude every day for a year. I know what a gate is: a set of checks that work has to pass before it moves on. I wrote some of the checks. And I still sat there genuinely unsure which checks this particular gate ran. The test suite? Which test suite? The build? Some review step it had invented that afternoon?

If you use Claude for real work, you know this feeling. The internet has named the dialect — Claudish — and built translators, dictionaries, and a small industry of “please talk normal” plugins for it. Most of that discussion is about how the dialect sounds. I wanted to know what it actually is. So I did the obvious thing: I pointed Claude at its own transcripts — every message it had sent me over 82 days — and had it measure itself against two baselines: a million words of human engineering prose, and GPT-5's output on the very same machine.

What came back changed how I read every message Claude sends me. Three findings, one dictionary, and one fix that follows from the diagnosis instead of fighting the symptom.

Finding 1 — It's not abstract. It's the nouns.

My first theory was that Claude talks in abstractions. Measured, that's exactly backwards: Claude's vocabulary is more concrete than mine, not less. Its signature move is using a concrete, physical noun for an abstract thing — the gate, the seam, the ledger, the lane. Nothing in your repo is any of those things.

Against a 927,000-word corpus of pre-AI engineering prose (public pull-request discussions from rust, kubernetes, cpython, django and eight other major repos, 2010–2020), Claude runs about 7× the overall density of figurative language (between 5.7× and 7.5× depending on how you draw the word list — and between 1.5× and 2× on measures that use no word list at all). But the gap isn't spread evenly across grammar. Figurative nouns: 10.5×. Figurative adjectives: about half that.

That grammatical detail turns out to be the whole mechanism. An adjective decorates a thing you're already holding — when an engineer calls a test brittle, you have the test; you're just adding a property to it. A metaphorical noun introduces a new entity. “The seam,” “the ledger,” “the gate” — before the sentence parses, you have to work out which real thing in your project it points to. Every figurative noun is a small search task, and Claude hands you one every 71 words.

The two vocabularies barely overlap, and they differ in kind. Human engineers' figures are overwhelmingly evaluative adjectives — code is ugly, hairy, gnarly, flaky, hacky, a mess; it complains and chokes. Forty-four such adjectives in their distinctive vocabulary. Claude has four — frozen, mechanical, surgical, wedged — and not one is evaluative. Humans complain about code. Claude governs it — with verdicts, rulings, doctrines, ledgers, and authorities.

Finding 2 — The referent isn't where you are

A metaphorical noun would be harmless if the thing it pointed to were named nearby. So we measured that too, with the word I trip on most. We sampled 96 real occurrences of “gate” from my transcripts and traced each one back through the session: where could a reader learn what this gate concretely is — which commands, which checks? Not a vague gloss; the actual specification.

45% of the time, the message you're reading doesn't tell you. One time in four, nothing you can see tells you — the checks ran as collapsed tool output, or were defined thirty-plus turns earlier, or in a previous session altogether. When the definition did exist in earlier turns, it sat a median of five turns back. My favorite specimen: a message that said only “my review gate as always” — a standing practice defined in some prior session entirely, unresolvable in principle by anyone but Claude.

And that's the asymmetry that explains the whole experience. Claude resolves “the gate” instantly, every time — it holds up to a million tokens of session in working memory, so for Claude the referent is always nearby. It writes like a reader who shares that memory. You don't. You're reading one message, hours later, with a human working memory. Claudish isn't obscure to its author; it's written for a reader with the author's context window.

Finding 3 — It's mostly not even Claude

Here the data corrected me. My machine also runs Codex, so I had a perfect control: 886,000 words of GPT-5 output, same user, same projects, same weeks.

GPT-5 runs at 72% of Claude's rate — and five times the human rate. So the dialect everyone is arguing about is mostly an LLM register, with a Claude-specific intensification of about 40%. The public discussion bundles the vocabulary into one “Claudish” list, and the control splits it cleanly: load-bearing really is Claude (18× GPT-5's rate), and so are verdict and genuinely. But seam and handoff — cited just as often — turn out to be more GPT-5 than Claude. Half the words in the memes are the other model's.

Why the obvious fixes fail

Once the diagnosis is metaphorical noun with a missing referent, you can see why the standard remedies disappoint — they're aimed at different variables entirely. We A/B tested the folk fixes across dozens of real agentic tasks, same model, same work:

“Be concise” attacks length; the problem is per-word. A shorter message can keep every metaphor — and in our test, it did worse than that: the concise arm cut 29 words and raised jargon density (+3 per 1,000, higher on 10 of 12 tasks, p=0.042 — the only statistically significant effect any instruction produced). You get the same figures, minus the surrounding words that helped you decode them.

Ban lists attack tokens; the register lives in domains. We banned the 17 most Claudish words. Compliance was perfect — all 17 vanished. And unlisted figures rose by 128% of the removed volume: fence appeared where guardrail was banned, land where gate was banned, carries where load-bearing was banned. Claude speaks a dozen deep metaphor families; ban the surface and it steps one word sideways in the same family. This, incidentally, is why your CLAUDE.md style rules feel like they “stop working after real work”: they were obeyed to the letter and never touched the thing underneath.

Neither fix ever addressed the missing referent. Which tells you exactly what the real fix has to do.

The dictionary: 50 words of Claudish

These are the 50 words that earned a place: harvested from 1.25M words of Claude's output by agents reading real passages, verified adversarially (67 of 162 candidates were rejected as literal or ordinary usage), then pruned of everything human engineers already say. 21 of the 50 appear exactly zero times in a million words of human engineering prose — the words nobody could have taught you, because no colleague writes them.

Claude 2362/Mhumans 127/M3030 uses

A plane in flight is nobody's floor; once it lands, you can stand on it. When Claude says a change, report, or verdict "lands", it means the work has arrived complete at its destination and stopped moving — merged to main, delivered, settled — so downstream work can now build on it. Until then it is "in flight": dispatched, existing somewhere, but not yet safe to depend on. Landing is not shipping: code can land on main and sit dormant with no user ever seeing it, and Claude's plans lean on that gap — "land it now, ship it later" is a normal sequence, not a contradiction.

Launch-readiness claim is formally withdrawn until this wave lands — the gate is now: T24 + T25 return and land → T26 dispatches and lands → gallery images curated and shipped → then I'll re-verify the whole surface and restate readiness. Your externals list is unchanged in parallel.

Claude 2259/Mhumans 18/M2555 uses

Everyone knows a gate as the barrier you stop at until someone lets you through. Claude uses it for a verification run with the authority to refuse: the full test suite, typecheck, and build that a change must pass before it may land. Calling it a gate rather than 'the tests' asserts three things: it sits at one fixed point in the pipeline, everything queues behind it, and passing is a discrete verdict — green or red, with a timestamp. So 'waiting on the gate' means the work is idle by design, not stuck. A guardrail constrains you while you keep moving; a gate stops you until you pass.

And the slice (2) gate is greenFAIL=0 FLAKE=0 read explicitly. The landing now waits only on the second reviewer's verdict; on PASS I land it.

You know mapping as charting unfamiliar territory before you travel through it. When Claude says 'let me first map the auth flow', it is announcing the same move: a look around a bounded region of the system before planning or changing anything. What it buys is order — survey first, commit after — not a product: no document is promised, and no claim that everything was found. Don't confuse it with the programmer's 'map X onto Y' or .map(); that's correspondence, this is reconnaissance. When you hear it, expect a pause, then a plan shaped by what the walk turned up.

A probe in the physical world is an instrument you send into something opaque — a space probe, a doctor's probe — to bring back a reading. Claude's probe is a small, purpose-built check fired at the live system to get a measurement instead of an argument: two lines of code, one request, one query. When Claude says it will “probe rather than reason about it,” it is choosing evidence over recall — the system is treated as opaque, and only the reading counts. Don't assume a probe is throwaway: probes pass or fail, get diffed against baselines, and the good ones are promoted into the permanent test suite.

I ran the new pnpm verify gate myself: 6/6 probes in about 3 seconds, now a permanent part of the verification loop alongside the 60-row suite.

In everyday speech, what you carry goes where you go. Claude uses it the same way about data: when X carries Y, Y lives inside X and travels with it, so wherever X ends up — a fresh session, another tool, production — Y arrives too, and nobody has to look it up separately. That travel is the point; plain "contains" only claims position. "Each issue carries the full ticket body" means the issue is self-sufficient — hand it off alone and nothing is missing. The negative form is a warning: "the snapshot carries no hopCount" means that field will not survive the trip.

Both ADRs now carry the full migration record.

To survive is to come through something that kills. Claude applies it to facts, tests, flags, and rules that are still present and still in force after a process that destroys things — a restart, a refactor, a compaction, a review pass. The word is never idle: it frames the process as a threat, implies other things did not make it through, and implies this thing's making it was not guaranteed. So when Claude asks whether a flag survives a restart, the restart is being cast as a destroyer of state, not a mere event. 'Persists' or 'remains' would report the same fact without the implied cull.

Everyone knows a verdict as what a jury hands down: final, and delivered by whoever was appointed to judge. Claude uses it for the bottom-line sentence a review, test critic, or grader returns after examining something — a conclusion reached by a judge, not a number measured by an instrument. Three things follow: it is final for this round, it is separable from the findings that support it, and Claude almost always front-loads it — so look at the first line. In the same paragraph, 'the numbers' are what was measured; 'the verdict' is what was concluded from them.

I'll independently verify the key claims in both builds before rendering a verdict.

A slice of bread is one serving cut from a loaf: bounded, countable, and the loaf only has so many. In projects run on a slice-budget process, that is the load Claude puts on the word: a slice is one numbered unit of work inside a release — an exact file list, landed as one commit once it passes review, and counted against a budget fixed up front ('five slices this release'). This is not agile's 'vertical slice'; Claude's slice promises nothing about cutting through every layer. 'Fits in slice 3' means atomic and already budgeted; 'needs its own slice' means Claude wants to spend one of a finite number.

I'll default the release budget to six slices and keep the declined-ideas ledger in the repo unless you say otherwise.

Claude 547/Mhumans 1/M599 uses

A broom sweep covers the whole floor in one motion — nothing gets special attention, and nothing gets skipped. That is what Claude means: one exhaustive pass over every file, applying a single check or edit — 'a repo-wide sweep', 'the docs sweep'. The word is a coverage claim, not a quality claim. When Claude says it swept, it is promising that the whole area went under one uniform rule — usually to head off the suspicion that it only spot-checked — while explicitly not promising that each hit was individually thought about. An audit judges every item; grep is the mechanism; a sweep is the promise that nowhere was missed.

When you arm an alarm, you don't set it off — you put it in the state where it will go off when its condition arrives. Claude uses arm the same way for watchers, monitors, and scheduled dispatches: the mechanism is already built and installed; arming is the final step that makes its trigger live. So 'the monitor exists but isn't armed' is a real, important state, and 'no longer re-arms' names a specific bug — it fired once and quietly stopped being ready. Unlike enabled or started, an armed thing does nothing at all; it waits, and acts only when its condition occurs.

A fresh reconnect monitor is armed to re-send the queued message (and open its watch) the moment the connection comes back up.

Claude 473/Mhumans 2/M527 uses

In a courtroom, a ruling is the judge's decision: it binds, it gets cited, and it stands until overturned. Claude gives your answers exactly that weight. When it formally puts a question to you and you answer, the answer becomes a ruling — often numbered, cited by name in later messages, able to supersede a written principle, and applied consistently everywhere until you explicitly reverse it. Two things follow. "Waiting for your ruling" means work is genuinely blocked on your authority, and one line from you unblocks it. And a ruling bounds scope in both directions: "the ruling did not order this" is Claude declining work your decision never covered.

On a road, a lane is the strip reserved for your vehicle: stay in it and nobody collides. When Claude runs several agents in parallel, each gets a lane — its own branch, its own files, its own cost profile, with exclusive right-of-way. The word is a claim about collision-avoidance by construction: agents in separate lanes cannot conflict, and a file both would touch is a hazard to route around. Unlike a branch, a lane can be frozen or closed as a unit — the workstream and its worker together. When you hear 'lane', you can infer the parallelism was designed, not accidental, and that merge conflicts would mean someone left theirs.

Claude 384/Mhumans absent409 uses

A ledger in ordinary life is the book where the accountant writes entries that are never erased — and that settles arguments. Claude means a named file kept beside the work that records decisions, declines, outcomes, or provenance, appended to but never rewritten, and consulted as the authority the next time the question comes up. Unlike a log, which is chronological, informational, and safe to discard, a ledger is meant to be reread and believed. Don't import double-entry bookkeeping: nothing has to balance. When Claude proposes a ledger, it is saying this class of fact will recur, and memory is not where it should live.

The repo becomes the canonical home, and the maintenance ledger's append-only discipline continues there with git history as its audit trail — which actually improves the project's own governance: provenance entries become commits.

A fleet is many vessels under one command. Claude's fleet is a set of AI agents launched together and run in parallel by one orchestrator — interchangeable units, centrally dispatched, separately billed. Choosing it over “subagents” or “workers” carries a quiet economic claim: a fleet is standing capacity with a cost profile, something you configure and operate rather than merely spawn (“fleet config,” “a fleet run,” “the fleet is mid-build”). When a message mentions the fleet, the useful questions are an operator's: how many units, doing what, at what spend, and who is watching them.

Claude 239/Mhumans 1/M398 uses

A seam in cloth is the stitched join where two panels meet. When Claude names a seam, it is pointing at a place, not a kind of thing: the one spot where two sides of a system — or two people's work — meet and negotiate. The claim is about where to act: put the test there, put the guard there, stop there, because effects on one side end at the joint. It does not by itself promise either side is swappable; that inference only holds when Claude says so ("extract the seam"). Between engineers, "seam discipline" means nobody crosses a shared joint without routing the change through whoever coordinates it.

Both engineers independently flagged the same shared-file hazard and routed it through me rather than each other — the seam discipline is reflexive now.

Claude 298/Mhumans 6/M396 uses

Everyday drift is slow, unsteered movement — a boat nobody is rowing. Claude uses it for two things that are supposed to stay identical diverging silently over time: docs versus code, a fork versus upstream, two copies of one rule. The word tells you nobody decided this and no single change caused it; every step was too small to notice. That is why drift never shows up in a changelog or a blame — you find it only by comparing the two copies directly. So Claude's fix is never a one-time correction but a mechanism, like deriving one copy from the other, that makes divergence impossible — 'so it can't drift again.'

Claude 223/Mhumans 1/M311 uses

An everyday ladder gets you up one rung at a time. Claude's ladder is any ordered scale of named levels — a retry-and-fallback sequence, risk tiers, curriculum stages — and the point of the figure is that each rung is individually citable: you can argue with 'rung 2', retire it, or collapse two rungs into one without touching the rest. Only escalation ladders imply climbing in order until a rung succeeds; a classification ladder just places things on it. So when Claude reports a flaw 'in my ladder', expect a surgical fix — one rung rewritten — not a redesign. Unordered alternatives would be a list; a ladder is ordered and numbered.

The engineer just caught a real flaw in my ladder — rung 3 assumed probe evidence covers writes, which is true for one harness and false for the other.

Claude 172/Mhumans 1/M303 uses

You park a car meaning to come back for it: it sits somewhere safe and findable, and leaving it there says nothing bad about the car. When Claude parks an idea, ticket, or decision, it is claiming all three — the item is written down somewhere retrievable, no judgment was passed against it, and someone intends to return. That separates 'parked' from 'declined' (judged and rejected) and from 'blocked' (something external is in the way): parking is purely a timing choice. Watch especially for 'parked with you' — it means the item now sits in your driveway, and nothing will move until you act.

Still in flight: my own T12 verification (landing on green), the T14 import-path engineer, and the two items parked with you (the hosting account login for CLI ops, and tracker quota for the last two ticket syncs).

Claude 143/Mhumans 4/M317 uses

Buying is handing something over to get something back, and Claude keeps that exchange intact: in Claudish every design choice has a price — complexity, latency, a migration — and 'X buys Y' names what the price purchased. You cannot say 'buys' without naming a return, so 'what does this buy us?' demands that a cost justify itself, and 'buys you nothing' is the strongest kill verdict in the dialect — pure cost, zero return. 'Gives us' or 'provides' imply nothing was paid, which is why they can never deliver that verdict. When Claude quantifies — 'buys 1.5x' — it is auditing whether a purchase already made was worth it.

  • Local SSDs: the page cache absorbs everything. The streaming reader already saturates the disk; the mmap path buys you nothing here.
  • Network mounts: the streaming reader is routinely stalled by round-trip latency. There, mmap is frequently the difference between a 3-second and a 90-second load.
Claude 244/Mhumans 12/M246 uses

Machinery in everyday speech is assembled apparatus — parts, upkeep, an operator's manual. Claude uses it for code that exists to make something else work rather than being the feature itself: retry queues, sync scaffolding, recovery paths. The word asserts assembly and maintenance cost, and a scrap-as-a-unit boundary — machinery can be ripped out whole, and Claude will report the line count when it goes. That makes the cost/benefit question askable, which is why 'assertions, not machinery' works as an argument; the verdict, though, comes from the surrounding sentence, not the word. A mechanism is one named device doing one job; machinery is always aggregate, with the bill in view.

Impossible cases get assertions, not machinery. If triggering a path requires corruption or 2^53 events, the answer is a validation rejection, not handled recovery.

Claude 208/Mhumans absent201 uses

Money and trust are earned by demonstrated return, never by saying so, and that is exactly the line Claude is drawing. A component "earns its keep" when it pays for its continuing presence with real, observed value — and the phrase implies a future re-audit: keep earning or get deleted, where "is worth it" would be a one-time verdict. In the sharper use, a claim is "earned" when it rests on something demonstrated rather than something asserted — a check earned via a live proof stays; one backed by a typed string goes. Either way, when Claude says "earned", it is citing evidence, not expressing approval.

Lock on what you've proven, never on what you've been told. That's what separates the origin block (earned via a live handshake proof — stays) from my sender guard (a typed string — gone).

Claude 101/Mhumans 4/M197 uses

You stamp a passport or a document: one press at a definite moment, leaving a mark the paper carries from then on. When Claude says a value is stamped — paid_at is stamped, the record carries a paid stamp — it means the write happened in a single stroke at the moment the event occurred, and the record now serves as proof rather than something recomputed later. Stamps are one-way: a flag can toggle back, a stamp is meant to survive whatever fails around it. When the word appears, ask what the mark proves and which later process reads it — usually a reconciliation or recovery path counting on that evidence.

paid_at is stamped — money really did arrive at that moment — so a pending row that carries a paid-at stamp is exactly the reconciliation worklist.

Claude 108/Mhumans absent174 uses

A wedge is the thing you jam under a door — and also the thin end you drive in first to split a log. Claude uses both faces without saying which. As bad news, a wedge is a jam: the process is alive but cannot move — not crashed, not slow, stuck — and 'the wedge is here' points at the exact step that pins it. As good news, the wedge is a product's narrow first use case: small on purpose, chosen because it opens something bigger. Context decides. In a debugging report, hunt for the jam point; in a strategy note, it names the beachhead.

So the trigger fires correctly; the refresh machinery is not dead.

The wedge is one step later, in refreshEndpoints (transport.ts:1480-1610):

  1. New candidate connection resolved, probes run, health confirmed.
  2. retireGeneration closes the old connection and all its routes (transport.ts:1495).
Claude 98/Mhumans 2/M167 uses

Reading is what you do to text, but Claude lets anything be read: a screen, a colour, a silence, a set of numbers. “It reads as X” claims that a generic viewer will take X away from it — regardless of what it actually is. That split between perceived and actual is the point: “the button reads as disabled” means users will believe it is disabled, even though it works. Unlike “looks like” or “seems,” which report Claude's own impression, “reads as” is a prediction about your audience — so the fix it calls for is never in the logic, always in the presentation.

The hero image should make someone stop scrolling and screenshot it; ours reads as tasteful wallpaper.

Claude 133/Mhumans absent158 uses

In a building, a load-bearing wall is the one you cannot knock out without the floor above coming down. Claude applies it to anything other things structurally depend on: a test, a config line, a sentence in a doc, a fact in an argument. It is deliberately not "important" — importance says the thing has value; load-bearing says something else is stacked on it, and names the direction of collapse. So when Claude marks a difference or a claim load-bearing, the invited move is concrete: before you change or delete it, ask what is resting on it — and check that first.

Two of its claims are load-bearing enough to spot-check against the source (they drive every downstream estimate).

Claude 239/Mhumans 1/M156 uses

An aircraft in flight has taken off but not landed — you cannot board it, unload it, or cheaply call it back. Claude uses 'in flight' for dispatched work and sent messages in that middle state: committed, in progress, not yet landed. Often it is just a status heading ('In flight: T12, T15'). But the phrase carries a claim: in-flight work cannot be safely edited from outside, and if the system dies now its outcome is indeterminate rather than failed. That separates it from 'queued' (not started, still recallable) and 'landed' (down and final) — in flight is the irreversible middle with no answer yet.

Both chunks are now in flight on disjoint trees — U3 (render-flicker follow-ups, UI files) and S5 (retry + backoff, sync files) — each getting its own verification pass.

Claude 110/Mhumans absent150 uses

In ordinary use, doctrine is settled official teaching — what a church or military writes down so members stop re-arguing it. Claude uses it for a project decision promoted into standing law: 'X is now doctrine' means the choice governs every future case of that shape, not just the one that prompted it, and Claude will consult it instead of re-deciding. It sits between a preference and an invariant — binding, yet amendable by explicit procedure, never silently. A rule answers one question; doctrine is the principle new situations get decided from. Seeing it, expect the rule applied to cases nobody has imagined yet, and any change to arrive announced.

2. The danger-allow-all stance is now doctrine: the rule-of-thumb line explicitly says it's for runs you're watching live in an attached terminal, never for unattended fleets.

Claude 106/Mhumans absent149 uses

A room's ceiling is not advice about how high to reach — it is the surface you hit. Claude uses it for a maximum someone committed to in advance: a line-count budget on a ticket, a cap on requests or retry rounds. The word choice carries the force: 'maximum' states a number; 'ceiling' states that the number binds. Going over one is a breach Claude will report ('net new code is over the ~400 ceiling'), and a missing ceiling is itself a gap worth naming. 'Hard ceiling' means enforced by code rather than by agreement — and expect raising any ceiling to be treated as your decision, never Claude's.

Mechanical ordinarily describes what a machine does: the same motion every time, no thought involved. Claude applies it to work and to rules, and both uses are claims about where judgment lives. Mechanical work is rote enough that following the procedure is the whole job — so the label is a routing decision: a cheaper model or a script can do it, and reviewing it means checking conformance, not taste. A mechanical rule is unreasoning by design: it fires on its pattern regardless of intent, which is exactly its value — it cannot be talked out of anything. The opposite is judgment: work that needs taste, or a layer that reads intent.

Household wiring connects appliances that already work on their own; the lamp and the outlet are fine — the question is what runs between them. Claude means the same: the code that connects components — registering a handler, passing a dependency, hooking a module into the request path. A wiring bug is a diagnosis: the parts are healthy; the connection is missing or attached to the wrong thing — which is why Claude says 'my first wiring could run two state machines at once', not 'my first implementation'. 'The wiring is correct in source' steers you the same way: connections declared properly — look for the fault at runtime.

When Claude says a ticket is "priced", the effort figure attached to it is a quote, not a prediction: offered before the work is dispatched, contestable at that moment, binding afterwards, and changeable only by an explicit re-price when scope moves — never by quiet drift. The same logic covers risk: a limitation "priced as acceptable" means its cost was stated out loud and knowingly accepted, on the record. So when Claude prices something, that is your moment to object — afterwards, the number binds.

A rung is one step on a ladder: you climb them in order, and each is a real place to stand. Claude uses it for a named level on an ordered scale — ticket sizes, escalation steps, fallback preferences. The choice of 'rung' over 'level' insists each step has defined content, not just a position: rung 3 means 'a complete feature', and you can argue about that meaning independently of where it sits. It also implies you move one rung at a time — skipping is a deviation worth calling out. A tier is a stratum something is placed in; a rung belongs to a specific ladder that someone is climbing.

Because a fence encloses a region where a gate guards a single point, the natural review question is geometric: does the fence actually fence? 'The fence leaked' means exactly that — the enclosure had a hole.

A lever is the arm you pull to move a machine. When Claude names something a lever, it is answering the question “what could we actually push?” — a concrete, available intervention that moves an outcome, usually one of an enumerated set (“the only remaining levers are X and Y”). Levers get listed, numbered, applied, and reverted. The neighbouring word matters: a knob is a value you tune within a designed range; a lever is where you push to change a result. So “we're out of levers” means the enumerated interventions are exhausted — not that ideas are.

A mint is the one place allowed to strike coins; anyone else producing them is counterfeiting. Claude reaches for the word when creation comes with authority: "the server mints the token" says the thing is brand-new, issued by the single party entitled to issue it, and will circulate — everyone downstream accepts it at face value. Plain "create" or "generate" asserts none of that. It extends to vocabulary: "minting a concept" means putting a new named abstraction into circulation that every reader must now recognize — which is why "solved it without minting a concept" is praise. A negative — "mints no OTP email" — guards that monopoly.

Share links are minted server-side for owned rows only; tests assert the tombstone page answers byte-for-byte identically for a real id, garbage, and a guess, and mints no OTP email.

Claude 88/Mhumans 5/M97 uses

You burn fuel and cash: fast consumption, with a whiff of waste. Claude burns metered allowances — tokens, API budget, model quota, time before a deadline — and picks the word where 'spend' would be too polite. Burn is spend plus a charge of wastefulness: consumption that is unbounded, unbudgeted, or lavished on work that did not deserve it. When Claude says a retry loop 'burns quota with no ceiling', the sentence is an accusation: the loop consumes without limit and buys nothing. Seeing 'burn' in a report, look for the missing cap — the word almost always marks consumption some mechanism should be bounding and is not.

House plumbing carries water from source to tap; nobody expects a pipe to make decisions. Claude means the connective code that moves a value from where it's produced to where it's used — parameter threading, flag-to-option wiring, pass-through layers. Calling code plumbing asserts it decides nothing: it can be leaky (a value dropped or mangled en route) but never wrong-headed. So 'no plumbing gaps' means every value arrived intact, and 'the plumbing is unexercised' is a coverage complaint about the pass-through path, not the logic. The word also flags where not to look for interesting bugs — though pipes hidden behind the wall are precisely where a boring leak goes unnoticed.

Everyday economics is the study of what things cost and why — scarcity, trade-offs, and incentives hanging together as one system. Claude borrows exactly that system-ness. 'The economics of X' — message economics, token economics — is not a list of prices but a claim that X's costs have internal structure: some things are scarce, others nearly free, and every action draws on one or the other. That structure is what licenses claims like the economics being 'inverted', which you cannot say about a mere list of numbers. When Claude invokes economics, it is warning you that your cost intuitions may not transfer, and inviting you to reason from this system's scarcities instead.

The economics of an agent team are a human org inverted — coordination and trust are nearly free, and attention is the scarce thing.

Claude 101/Mhumans absent81 uses

A highway guardrail is something you are never meant to touch: you drive freely inside it, and it matters only when you drift. Claude means a standing rule or automatic check — a policy in a config file, an abort condition in a job, a test pinning a known failure mode. You never have to satisfy a guardrail; hitting one is an accident, not a checkpoint. So 'the guardrail fired' means a standing rule stopped the run — the work did not fail on its own merits; often the system behaved exactly as designed. A gate stops you and demands to be passed; a tripwire prevents nothing and only reports afterward.

That's almost certainly earned: your session visited ~900 pages in this morning's crawl, and this is precisely the signal the runner is built to detect and abort on rather than hammer through. Nothing in our pipeline misbehaved — the guardrail fired as designed. Recommendation: give the session a few hours' rest; the aborted run's remaining page is still queued, so the next resume will pick it back up.

Claude 71/Mhumans absent80 uses

Your spine is what keeps the rest of you from being a pile: everything attaches to it and takes its shape from it. When Claude calls something a spine — a schema, a release plan, one organizing idea — it is claiming the rest coheres because of that thing and scatters without it, which is why 'spine work' is undeferrable: polish can wait, the spine cannot. Where the spine is sequential — a plan's dates, a document's section order — it also carries the order things happen in; a core is just a center, but a spine is an axis, and everything else hangs off it in its place.

A knob on an amplifier exists to be turned: cheap to adjust, easy to turn back, bounded by design. When Claude calls a parameter a knob, it is asserting all three at once — the value is meant to vary, varying it costs nothing structural, and its range was chosen deliberately. That is why "it's a knob we can turn later" ends a design argument: pick any reasonable value now, because tuning is not a commitment. The negative form matters too: "this is NOT a knob" warns that no such control exists — changing that behaviour means redesign, and a test that fakes the control is papering over its absence.

Retry throttling is NOT a built-in knob. Existing tests monkey-patch the client to fake it.

Claude 65/Mhumans absent71 uses

A stranded traveler is stuck: not lost, not hurt, just somewhere with no way onward. Claude uses strand for a record or resource left in a state no code path will ever move it out of — the row is reachable, the data intact, but no process is coming for it. So 'the payment path can no longer strand a charge' is a strong claim: every state now has an exit. The remedy for a stranded record is never a bug fix but a newly written recovery path. An orphan has lost its owner; a stranded record may still have one — what it lacks is a way forward.

Everyone knows a trade: you give one thing, you get another, and the deal itself can be judged. When Claude calls a design decision 'a bad trade' or 'the right trade', it has already priced both sides in the same currency — extra battery for less waiting, more machinery for a small win — and the verdict falls on the exchange rate, not on either side alone. That makes the sentence a complete argument: the change can work perfectly and still lose. Unlike 'trade-off', which merely names a tension, 'a trade' is a struck deal with a grade. To push back, re-price one side — don't defend the feature.

Naive two-phase (index pass + existing file-based catch-up) = 60 + 90 ≈ 150ms/doc total: ~70% more total work and battery than today's single pass, to save a third on time-to-first-search. As a pure scheduling change, it's a bad trade.

Claude 70/Mhumans 3/M70 uses

Personal hygiene prevents illness you don't have yet, and that is precisely the class of work Claude files under the word: “commit hygiene,” “data hygiene,” “leak hygiene.” A hygiene item is explicitly not a bug — nothing behaves wrongly today, and Claude uses the word to disclaim exactly that (“hygiene only; no behavioral impact”). But it is not dismissive either: hygiene is routine and preventive, cheap to skip once and ruinous to skip always. The translation for triage: safe to defer this sprint, dangerous to defer forever.

The empty-report rule first: strongly agree, and it's more than hygiene — it makes silence auditable.

Claude 55/Mhumans absent64 uses

Military reconnaissance is scouting: go look, touch nothing, come back and report before the operation begins. Claude uses it for exactly that shape of work on a codebase, an API, or infrastructure — a bounded, read-only pass taken before any change is committed. Announcing "a quick recon" is announcing a phase boundary, and it comes with a contract that "let me investigate" does not: nothing will be written, the pass ends in a report, and the real work is still ahead, separately gated. So when a recon report lands, you are being asked to review findings — not a change.

Let me ground the discussion with a quick read-only recon: pull the actually-touched paths from both repos' histories and check their git remote state locally.

Claude 74/Mhumans absent62 uses

Sharpening a knife does not give you a different knife — the same blade cuts better. When Claude sharpens a claim, a principle, or an analysis, the thing keeps its identity and gains discriminating power: afterwards it separates cases it used to blur through. That is why a constraint can sharpen an analysis — narrowing the blade is what makes it bite — and why 'sharpen your principle into an operational test' means the same principle, now precise enough to decide real cases. 'One small sharpening' signals a cheap edit, not a redesign. 'Refine' just says better; 'tighten' reduces slack; sharpen specifically adds the power to tell things apart.

Claude 44/Mhumans 2/M50 uses

A dial on a stove is turned, not flipped — continuous adjustment, not on/off. When Claude calls a parameter a dial, it means a tunable quantity you set after the mechanism is built: bucket size, refill rate, a cost-versus-quality balance. 'Two tunable dials' promises two independent adjustments, each controlling one property, and it frames future disagreement as choosing a setting rather than redesigning anything — settle it by turning. In Claude's usage, dial, knob, and lever are near-interchangeable; the live contrast is with a toggle or mode, which is discrete. One unrelated homonym: in networking passages, a service that 'dials' is just opening an outbound connection — context makes that obvious.

A bomb's blast radius is the circle around it: everything inside gets hit, everything outside stays untouched. Claude uses the phrase for the exact set of things a change, credential, or bug can damage if it goes wrong — and treats that set as enumerable before acting ('exactly: our one service, our database, our bucket — nothing else'). That edge is what 'impact' and 'risk' lack. Because the perimeter can be drawn in advance, it can also be shrunk, and much of Claude's design argument is about shrinking it before anything runs. Keep it distinct from severity: blast radius counts what is inside the circle; severity says how bad each hit is.

The dev machine's blast radius is then exactly: our one service, our database, our storage bucket — nothing else in the account, no other environments, no other products.

Claude 35/Mhumans absent42 uses

A scout is sent ahead into unfamiliar territory to look and report back — never to engage. Claude uses the word for a subagent or preliminary pass dispatched into unfamiliar code with exactly those orders: map the terrain, return a written report, change nothing. The role is the contract — scout reports often carry a 'repo untouched' stamp — so what comes back is a map (paths, line numbers, how the pieces connect), and every decision still belongs to whoever sent it. When Claude says 'let me scout that first', read-only reconnaissance precedes any plan; an 'engineer' agent acts, a scout never does.

Claude 34/Mhumans absent38 uses

Headroom is literally the space between your head and the ceiling — room above you, in the direction you're growing, ending at a hard stop. Claude uses it for the distance between a current measured value and a named limit, expressed as capacity you're free to spend: '2.4x headroom' against a budget means you can more than double the load before anything breaks. Unlike margin (a buffer held in reserve) or slack (unused capacity with no ceiling implied), headroom is permission to grow — and it presupposes the limit is hard: you'll feel the ceiling when you reach it, not degrade gradually.

Worst case is 620 requests — 41% of the 1,500 budget, 2.4× headroom.

The fix: report to the boss

There's a scene in Margin Call where Jeremy Irons, as the bank's CEO, asks a young analyst to explain the crisis that will end the firm:

Maybe you could tell me what is going on. And please, speak as you might to a young child. Or a golden retriever. It wasn't brains that brought me here; I promise you that.

The false modesty is the point. Tuld is the sharpest person in the room, and demanding the plain version is how he tests whether the speaker understands what they're saying. That's the right frame for fixing Claudish — because “the gate is green” is compatible with not knowing which gate. “Install, typecheck, and the 771-test suite all exit zero” is not. The plain version isn't dumbed down. It's proof of work.

/report-to-the-boss

A Claude Code skill built from the two findings, not the symptoms. It doesn't ban a single word and never asks for brevity — both measured failures. Instead it sets a stance and one mechanical rule:

The stance: every message is a report to someone sharp who was out of the room, reads only this message, and treats your plain explanation as the test of whether you understand your own work.

The rule: use all fifty words freely — but on first use in a message, name the concrete referent within a sentence or two. The test: could the reader answer “which one, exactly?” from this message alone.

Full honesty about its status: the instruction-following data says this design should work — models in our tests obeyed precisely the mechanical, named things (word lists, distance rules) and ignored abstract pleas. But the skill itself is newly written, and I'm currently evaluating it the only way that means anything: forking my own real sessions and regenerating Claude's reports with it on. I'll publish the before/afters.

How this was measured

Method, in one paragraph — The core method is the oldest one in corpus linguistics — count n-grams per million words against a reference corpus — in the tradition of the Google Books Ngram project, which both inspired this study and served as its first baseline (and its last: Books frequencies are how we pruned everyday figures like “baked in” from the dictionary). Three purpose-built reference corpora each rule out one explanation: a million words of pre-AI human engineering prose (“that's just how people write about code”), 886k words of same-machine GPT-5 (“that's just how LLMs write”), and my own typed prompts (“Claude is echoing you”). Statistical screens only proposed candidates; over a hundred reading agents verified each one against real passages, and an adversarial pass rejected 67 of 162. Every number was then recomputed from raw text. The numbers fell as the controls improved — an early naive comparison said 15×; the honest figure is about 7× — and the audit that shrank them was run by the study's own agents. That direction of travel is the best credential I can offer.

Honest limits: one user's transcripts, one machine, 82 days, English only. The gate accounting is agent-judged (n=76 checkpoint-sense uses, verbatim specifying quotes retained, spot-verified by hand). Glossary examples are lightly anonymized real messages. A model-level aside for practitioners: on these transcripts Fable 5 ran the densest register (33.8 figures/1k), Opus 5 lighter (24.6), Sonnet 5 lightest (17.9) — though the latter two are measured on far less text.
